Bukhtarma Reservoir

The Bukhtarma Reservoir is Kazakhstan's largest man-made lake, boasting impressive dimensions. Stretching for over 500 kilometers (311 mi) in length, it eclipses even Lake Michigan in the USA. Its width measures a substantial 35 kilometers (22 mi), with an average depth of approximately 10 meters (33 ft). Its vastness has earned it the nickname "the sea" among locals due to its immense size. This reservoir came into being through the construction of the Bukhtarma hydroelectric power plant on the Irtysh River in 1960, and its water level is meticulously regulated. As a testament to its grandeur, it ranks among the world's largest artificial reservoirs.

The surrounding landscape is nothing short of breathtaking, characterized by mountains, bays, pine forests, and sandy beaches. On clear days, the water takes on a mesmerizing blue-green hue. The coastline is dotted with recreational centers catering to a wide range of tastes and budgets. Some of these establishments offer cottages, where one can savor the morning tranquility while enjoying a cup of aromatic coffee or berry tea, all while watching the sun's reflections dance on the water's surface. For those seeking adventure, boat and motorboat rentals are available for mini-excursions on the Bukhtarma Reservoir. Alternatively, setting up a tent camp along the shore provides an opportunity to engage in fishing, with a chance to catch crucian carp, trout, pike, and various other fish. Notably, the Bukhtarma Reservoir holds the title of being the country's premier fishing destination.

The region surrounding the Bukhtarma Reservoir boasts a diverse ecosystem. Abundant plant life includes fir, pine, larch, birch, currant, rose hip, and hop, among others. The fauna is equally captivating, with inhabitants such as chipmunks, wolverines, black storks, swans, wapitis, and a host of other species.

Recognizing its ecological significance, the Bukhtarma Reservoir enjoys state protection. A diligent helicopter patrol keeps watch over the surrounding forests to prevent and address potential fires, while the Department of Ecology maintains constant vigilance over water quality and environmental indicators.
