Kiin-Kerish Tract

Whenever you assume that East Kazakhstan has no more surprises in store, rest assured that this is far from the truth. The Kiin-Kerish Tract stands as a testament to this fact. Over time, the relentless forces of nature – time, wind, and water – have transformed this region into a natural wonder, replete with colorful and distinctive landscapes.

Geological Marvels

The otherworldly clay formations of orange, white, and red color unfurl like tongues of fire before the eyes of travelers venturing through the eastern reaches of our country. Kiin-Kerish, however, is not confined to just clay rocks; it also encompasses a desert plain and low hills.

Beyond its Martian-like topography, this destination beckons explorers with its extraordinary features. Amidst the clay crevices, magnolias, araucarias, and other vegetation thrives. This anomaly can be attributed to the prevalent hot climate in the region. Geological studies revealed that millions of years ago, during the Mesozoic era, a tropical climate held sway here, leaving an indelible mark on the vibrant hues of these rocks.

Ancient and Modern Life

Kiin-Kerish is a paleontological treasure trove. The remains of ancient vertebrates – ancestors to rhinoceroses, crocodiles, and turtles – are preserved in the valley's sediment. Occasionally, imprints of ancient plants can be seen on the rocks. However, the tract's most remarkable archaeological discoveries are fragments of dinosaur eggshells.

The area is a sanctuary for rare species of wildlife and unique flora. The lesser kestrel and Central Asian buzzard choose this habitat for nesting, while the steppe eagle, saker falcon, golden eagle, and others soar in the skies. Among the diverse flora, one can spot Krylov's ferula, Altai wormwood, Zaysan echinops, and more. Not to be overlooked is the endangered yellow lemming, a noteworthy representative of the local fauna.

How to get there?

The Kiin-Kerish Tract is located near Lake Zaysan and the Zaisan depression. You can drive through the depression to reach the tract (be sure to drive a 4x4). To reach Kiin-Kerish from Ust-Kamenogorsk, follow the A-350 highway, which will lead you to Lake Zaysan. Upon reaching the lake, make a right turn onto the M-38 road. Continue your journey along M-38 until you merge onto highway R-164, and subsequently, onto highway R-147. The route from Ust-Kamenogorsk to the Kiin-Kerish tract spans approximately 300 kilometers (186 mi).
