Yazevoye Lake

The Kazakh Altai region boasts a wealth of natural wonders, including lakes, rivers, and waterfalls. One of the most enchanting lakes in this area is Yazevoye Lake, also known as Lake Karakol, situated within the boundaries of the Katon-Karagai National Park. Despite its relatively modest size, with a total length of 3 kilometers, Lake Yazevoye captivates the hearts of many admirers.

Nestled amidst emerald meadows and surrounded by coniferous forests, Lake Yazevoye offers a serene and picturesque setting. The Yazevaya River flows from the lake, cascading into a waterfall about 5 kilometers downstream. The lake, river, and waterfall derive their names from the ide fish, known as "yaz" in Russian, which thrives abundantly in the lake's waters.

During sunny weather, tourists relish the opportunity to embark on boat or catamaran excursions on the lake. Despite its high-altitude location at the foot of the mountains, the lake's water remains pleasantly warm for summer swimming. Its sandy and pebbly shores provide ideal spots for setting up tents, leisurely strolls, and group relaxation. For those seeking a more comfortable retreat, a guest house is available on the eastern shore.

Lake Yazevoye also serves as a transit point for travelers en route to Mount Belukha and other captivating attractions within the park, such as the Berel Glacier and Ravnovesie Lake. Nearby, a hiking trail awaits those eager to explore the area.

The untamed beauty of this region allures visitors with its seclusion and unspoiled natural splendor. It is essential to bear in mind that the national park is a protected area, and Lake Yazevoye lies in proximity to the Kazakh-Russian border, so be sure to always carry your identification documents.

How to get there?

To reach Katon-Karagai National Park, you have the option of traveling by car or taking a regular bus departing from the Ust-Kamenogorsk bus station via the R-163 highway.
