Lake Zaysan

Lake Zaysan, located in Eastern Kazakhstan, I nestled between three mountain ranges: Tarbagatai, Altai, and Kalbin. To the east, it receives the flowing waters of the Black Irtysh River from China, while Kazakhstan's own Irtysh River flows out of the lake. Stretching 105 kilometers (65 mi) in length and spanning 48 kilometers (30 mi) in width, Lake Zaysan boasts both substantial size and remarkable beauty. Despite its vastness, Zaysan maintains a relatively shallow depth, averaging around 15 meters (49 ft). Fascinatingly, scientists suggest that Lake Zaisan was formed 70 million years ago, making it the world's oldest lake.

For travelers, Lake Zaysan presents a captivating contrast to the surrounding landscapes of eastern Kazakhstan. The scenery transforms dramatically, shifting from rocky steppes to sandy terrain, or from peculiar clay formations to densely forested mountains. Centuries ago, the Dzungars named it "The Ringing Lake" due to the chorus of buzzing mosquitoes. Furthermore, Lake Zaysan serves as a haven for fishing enthusiasts, offering a diverse array of fish species such as crucian carp, bream, pike, taimen, and crayfish, among others.

The lake's shoreline is adorned with numerous landmarks. Ashutas, for instance, is a submerged shoreline surrounded by intricate clay formations of varying hues. Visitors can also explore the fishing village of Akshuat or the Zaysan Depression, through which the road to the Kiin-Kerish Tract winds its way. In the northern reaches of the lake, Cape Shekelmes beckons with its captivating vistas.

Thankfully, Lake Zaysan remains unburdened by the encroachment of sprawling cities or industrial complexes along its shores, a boon for its ecological well-being. However, nearby cities and towns boast an array of accommodations, from resorts and hotels to hostels and cafes, where visitors can rest and savor local cuisine. The summer months, when water levels rise and temperatures are comfortable for swimming, mark the prime season to explore the lake's wonders. From November to April, Lake Zaysan freezes over, yet even in winter, it draws tourists from diverse corners of the country eager to witness its frozen splendor.

How to get there?
