WWII Memorial Complex
The WWII Memorial Complex in Ust-Kamenogorsk is located at the confluence of the Irtysh and Ulba rivers. The complex, opened in 1995, is divided into several zones. Each of the zones is represented by important objects – a symbolic burial mound, the Eternal Flame, the Square of Memory, the Wall of Heroes, the Obelisk, and the Wall of Sorrow.
The Wall of Heroes honors the Heroes of the Soviet Union from Eastern Kazakhstan who participated in WWII. The wall is made of red granite, and the names are cast in bronze.
The Eternal Flame represents the faith and bravery of those who perished in the war. Throughout the country, Eternal Flames shine like stars in the darkness, symbolizing hope for a brighter future.
The Wall of Sorrow is made of gray granite. On it, visitors can read the names of those regions of East Kazakhstan whose residents participated in WWII.
In the center of the memorial complex, an obelisk rises upward. The stele covered with titanium plates symbolizes the desire for victory even in incredibly difficult times.
The symbolic burial mound serves as a memorial to the East Kazakhstanis who died in the war and were unable to return home, resting in foreign lands instead. While no one is buried there, it represents a collective grave for those lost souls.
