East Kazakhstan Regional History Museum

The East Kazakhstan Regional History Museum in Ust-Kamenogorsk opened its doors back in 1915, making it one of the oldest museums in the country. Initially, the museum only had a few rare artifacts on display, but over the years, the collection has grown to become one of the largest in Kazakhstan. It showcases a wide range of unique artifacts from ancient times to the present day.

With over 147 thousand exhibits and counting, the museum is constantly expanding its collection. Visitors can marvel at genuine gold artifacts from burial grounds like Shilikty, Berel, and Eleke Sazy. One of the highlights is the reconstruction of burial mound No. 145 from the Zevakinsky burial ground, complete with a skull that has been anthropologically reconstructed to show what people looked like back then. There's even a bronze mirror with a runic inscription that was found there.

The museum also features artifacts from archaeological sites such as Kyzyltas, Karashat, and Bobrovka, as well as stone sculptures from the Turkic era. You can explore household items and clothing from nomads of the Kazakh Altai, as well as wooden, leather, and felt art objects in the Scythian animalistic style.

Step into another hall and you'll find household items from the 18th-20th centuries, including Tula samovars, German watches, earthenware, porcelain dishes, and Valdai bells. There's even an exhibition dedicated to items from WWII.

But that's not all – the museum also houses stuffed animals and birds native to the region, and provides information on the area's mineral resources. The East Kazakhstan Regional History Museum truly brings the history of the region to life.
