Alau Ice Rink
In 2011, Astana hosted the 7th Asian Winter Games, marking the capital's first major international sporting event. The city had dedicated several years to preparing for the Games, as it lacked the necessary infrastructure. As part of the preparations, the Alau Ice Rink was constructed. This state-of-the-art facility not only met the event's requirements but also left a lasting impact on the city's sports scene.
The Alau Ice Rink serves as a versatile venue, hosting a variety of competitions and training camps across several winter sports disciplines. Winter sports such as speed skating, figure skating, short track, ice hockey, bandy, and curling receive particular attention. Additionally, the complex offers playgrounds for basketball, volleyball, and mini-football.
Within its early years of operation, the Alau Ice Rink garnered recognition on a global scale. In 2011, following the Asian Games, the complex ranked 18th among high-speed skating rinks worldwide, as part of a ranking system that considered the combined achievements of athletes across all distances. A year later, the rink climbed to an impressive 6th place in the same ranking.
Alau has become a beloved destination for the city's residents. It offers an opportunity for ice skating without the discomfort of freezing temperatures. The ice rink draws an average of 1,500 visitors daily, both amateurs and professionals. On weekends and holidays, the number of visitors doubles.
The Ice Palace operates every day of the week, with the exception of Mondays. Admission is free for children and individuals with disabilities. Skaters have the option to bring their own skates or rent them on-site.
