Atyrau Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge

In 2018, the capital of Kazakhstan celebrated its 20th anniversary with a significant milestone in architecture – the Atyrau Bridge. Gifted by the government of the Atyrau region, this bridge serves as a connecting link between the two banks of the Esil River.

Weighing a massive 2,000 tons, concerns were raised about the bridge's strength and safety. To address these concerns, a rigorous testing phase was conducted before the official opening. Despite being designed exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists, the bridge underwent a stress test using 12 trucks weighing between 14 to 18 tons each. The total load on the bridge during the test amounted to approximately 200 tons, and the structure effortlessly withstood this weight.

The Atyrau Bridge stands as an exemplary piece of biotech architecture, where organic natural forms served as inspiration for the architects. From an external perspective, the bridge resembles the skeletal framework of an immense fish. Upon closer observation, the interwoven structures of the bridge create an intricate ornament in the form of a flower. This distinctive architectural design of the Atyrau Bridge has garnered admiration not only from the residents of the capital but also from architectural experts. In 2021, the bridge was honored with the prestigious ArchDaily & Strelka Award.Мост "Атырау" в Астане

A notable feature of the Atyrau Bridge is the sculpture of a sturgeon, a fish renowned in the Caspian Sea and the Atyrau Region. According to a belief held by the residents of Astana, rubbing the sculpture and making a wish would lead to its fulfillment. The connection between the sculpture and the bridge's fish-like form has earned it the endearing nickname of the «Fish Bridge».
