Emerald Towers

Amongst the impressive skyline of Astana, the Emerald Towers captivate attention not only due to their towering height but also their striking color. The deep green hue immediately catches the eye, making them distinct from the surrounding buildings. The lower floors of the towers boast a refined finish of natural stone, while their facades feature expansive panoramic windows.

Situated near the Temir Zholy Tower, the headquarters of Kazakhstan's railway company, on Nurzhol Boulevard, the Emerald Towers form an extraordinary composition. Designed by Canadian architect Roy Varacalli, the towers possess an intentional asymmetry. From the 32nd floor of each tower, the floor area gradually increases, resulting in a deviation of 15 meters on the final floor, a unique architectural feature.

Third wheel?

Expectations for the Emerald Towers initially envisioned a complex consisting of three towers with varying heights. However, due to the challenges posed by the global financial crisis of 2008-2009, construction faced setbacks. The construction of the main tower commenced in 2006 and concluded only in 2011, with over a year of work halted during the crisis.

The tallest tower of the complex stands at a height of 201 meters (660 ft), boasting 45 floors. Efficient vertical transportation is facilitated by 18 high-speed elevators. The offices of Kazakhstan's national oil and gas company, KazMunayGas, predominantly occupy this tower.

For nearly a decade, the Emerald Towers proudly held the title of Astana's tallest buildings until the completion of the Abu Dhabi Plaza, whose tallest tower soars to a height of 311 meters (1020 ft).

Construction on the second tower of the Emerald Quarter began in 2010, culminating in a structure with 37 floors and a height surpassing 180 meters (590 ft). This tower houses various amenities, including a supermarket, a cafe, a fitness center, bank branches, and offices of both Kazakhstani and international companies.

Regrettably, the planned construction of the third tower never came to fruition. The designated space remained vacant for several years. Presently, an entirely different structure is being erected in its place. Nonetheless, the two existing towers harmoniously contribute to the architectural landscape of Astana's left bank. Perhaps, in retrospect, a third tower would have been superfluous to the overall aesthetic appeal of the Emerald Towers.
