Kazakh Music and Drama Theater named after K. Kuanyshbayev
The Kazakh Music and Drama Theater named after K. Kuanyshbayev stands as a coeval of Kazakhstan's independence, having been established in 1991. Named in honor of the esteemed Kazakh and Soviet actor Kalibek Kuanyshbaev, this theater has become a symbol of artistic excellence and national pride.
A Grander Stage
Over the course of a quarter-century, the theater's influence has grown, accompanied by an expanding repertoire, a larger ensemble of talented artists, and a burgeoning audience. As a result, the theater required a new and more spacious location. In 2020, a magnificent new building was erected, leaving the old premises to house the Musical Theater of the Young Spectator.
The current theater building, located on Kuanyshbayev Street, is a marvel to behold. From its meticulously crafted exterior decorations to the intricate stained-glass windows, stately columns, and captivating sculptures, every detail reflects elegance and tastefulness. Gracing the front of the building is a small fountain, featuring a sculpture of a kobyz – a Kazakh musical instrument.
Words fail to capture the true splendor of the theater's interior decoration. Spanning three floors, it houses a grand hall with 635 seats, a more intimate chamber hall with 202 seats, an art gallery, a restaurant, and a hall for ceremonial gatherings.
Alive with Artistry
The theater's repertoire encompasses the finest works of Kazakh and world dramaturgy. The actors regularly embark on national tours and represent their country at international festivals. Furthermore, the theater's stage is not only reserved for adult audiences but also serves as a gateway to enchanting fairy tales for children. Additionally, creative evenings and concerts of symphonic music grace the theater.
