Park of Peace and Reconciliation
The Park of Peace and Reconciliation in Astana has seen global faith leaders… and 90s heartthrobs. But let’s go in order.
The park appeared in Astana in 2022 but was officially opened only in September 2025 during the VIII Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions. Its mission is to prove that different beliefs and cultures can coexist peacefully. At the heart of the park stands the Tree of Life – an oak crowned with a dome, symbolizing one sky for all humanity. Four entrances lead to it from the east, west, north, and south, embodying openness and equality.
One of the park’s highlights is the Starry Sky tunnel. At night, hundreds of lights ignite overhead, turning it into a ready-made Instagram reel. Around the Tree of Life are trees planted by world religious leaders. One of them belongs to Pope Francis, who planted it here in 2022. Each tree comes with a plaque and a QR code so you can scan and learn who planted it, when, and even what species it is.
And then, history took an unexpected turn. On September 20, 2025, the park became a pilgrimage site not only for spiritual seekers but also for the fans of 90s pop. Backstreet Boys members Brian, Nick, Howie, and AJ planted pine trees here. Kevin couldn’t make it, so the band planted his tree for him.
Today, spirituality and pop culture don’t clash here, they harmonize. Come see it for yourself. Where else can you contemplate eternity and immediately catch yourself humming Everybody, yeah… rock your body?
