Saryarka Velodrome
The Saryarka Velodrome, situated in Astana, is a captivating architectural gem surrounded by a cluster of impressive sports facilities. Each structure exhibits its own unique design, yet they share a common thread of distinction. The velodrome itself boasts a distinctive shape resembling a cyclist's helmet.
Constructed in 2011, the velodrome initially resided in a remote part of the city, with the vast steppe stretching nearby. Now it’s a bustling area that continues to develop. The year of the velodrome’s completion coincided with the hosting of the prestigious 7th Asian Winter Games in Astana. The complex proudly accommodated the short track and figure skating competitions. Notably, 2011 was an exceptional year for the velodrome, as it was acclaimed as the finest in the world.
One of the velodrome's distinctive features lies in its track, crafted from high-quality Siberian cedar wood. To ensure its durability and prevent deformation, the wood was carefully stored in specialized chambers for two years and treated with a protective chemical composition. The track spans a length of 250 meters and measures 7 meters in width, while the stands surrounding the arena offer seating for over 9,000 spectators.
The Saryarka sports complex embodies versatility, serving as a multifunctional venue with two primary facilities—the velodrome and an ice arena. Originally designed solely as a velodrome, an ice rink was added later, expanding its capabilities. This adaptability allows the velodrome to transform into various sporting arenas, such as a boxing ring, judo mat, gymnastics floor, as well as a basketball or volleyball court. Moreover, it can be easily converted into a concert ground.
