Esil River Embankment

If you are short on time during your visit to Astana, taking a stroll along the Esil River (also known as the Ishim River) embankment is a must-do activity. It is a popular spot among residents and tourists alike, especially on weekends and holidays. The Esil River embankment refers to a particular stretch of the right riverbank, extending from the Tulpar bridge to the Karaotkel bridge.

Where the old and new merge

For the locals, the embankment is the heart of the city and the most vibrant place on the right bank. The two banks of the Esil River are dramatically different: the left bank is modern and futuristic, with its towering skyscrapers and administrative buildings. The right bank exudes a calmer vibe reminiscent of the old town before Astana's rise to capital status. If the Baiterek Monument symbolizes the left bank of the city, the Esil River embankment is the favorite spot on the right bank. The old and new Astana blend harmoniously here, making it an ideal place for both those seeking a peaceful time and those in search of entertainment.

The «fish bridge»

Walking along the embankment, you will be struck by the vast open spaces, the blue sky, and the clean air. The view of the city from both banks is breathtaking, and the river, although not very deep or wide, appears to be so. Despite this, the townspeople enjoy catamaran and boat rides. The embankment is also home to four bridges, two of which are for automobiles and the other for pedestrians. The fourth bridge, the Atyrau Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge, was opened in 2018 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the capital. The bridge's unique design, resembling a fish carcass, has earned it the popular nickname «fish bridge» and also prestigious architectural awards. It is not only an adornment of the embankment, but also an important link between the right and left banks, connecting them in a fast and convenient way. Thanks to the Atyrau Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge, one can now easily walk from the embankment to Central Park.

Popular year-round

During summer, the embankment is bustling with street musicians, artists, and artisans, as well as food vendors selling delicious treats and ice cream. In winter, the embankment transforms into a massive ice rink where people of all ages can rent snowmobiles, go skating, play hockey, and slide down hills. After a day of fun, you can warm up with hot tea and hearty snacks at one of the many cafes and kiosks.

How to get there?

The nearest bus stop to the embankment is called «Samal Microdistrict.» It is located on Respublika Avenue. You can get there by buses #1, 2, 3, 10, 20, 23, 25, 31, 32, 37, 45, and 52.
