Imangali Mosque

The Imangali Mosque is Atyrau’s main spiritual landmark and one of the region’s most distinctive examples of Islamic architecture. Built in 2000, when Imangali Tasmagambetov was the city akim (mayor), it was named in his honor.

Two 26-meter minarets rise above the surrounding buildings, giving the mosque an instantly recognizable profile. Light walls, clear geometric lines, and deep blue domes form a weightless silhouette visible from afar.

The main entrance is a tall arched niche decorated with Oriental tiles and Arabic script. This detail echoes Persian tradition and sets the overall tone of the architectural ensemble.

At the heart of the complex stands the central dome, 23 meters (7 ft) high and roughly 7 meters (23 ft) in diameter. Its exterior is marked by smooth, flowing forms, while the interior features refined decorative elements.

The main prayer hall accommodates up to 600 worshippers. It is spacious, bright, and thoughtfully arranged for comfort during prayer. A separate women’s hall with 100 seats is divided from the main space by a wooden lattice.

The grounds include a library and a Quran reading room with religious literature in Kazakh, Arabic, and Russian. Modern ablution rooms are also available, fully equipped for pre-prayer rituals.
