Lake Inder
Lake Inder is one of the most remarkable natural wonders in Western Kazakhstan. Locals call it Tuzdykol, meaning “salt lake” in Kazakh. This name perfectly captures its essence. The lake’s snow-white shores, encrusted with shimmering salt, create an otherworldly landscape.
Healing Mud
Every summer, locals and travelers come here to bathe in the salty waters and apply the lake’s mud, which is believed to relieve joint and skin ailments. The water contains bromine, magnesium, lithium, potassium, iodine, chalk, and rubidium.
However, scientists note that these therapeutic effects haven’t been conclusively proven. Visitors are advised not to collect salt or mud from the shore, helping preserve the lake’s natural balance.
Snow-White Shores and Mirror-Like Water
The lake’s beauty lies in its dazzling shoreline. A thick crust of salt glitters under the sun, resembling freshly fallen snow. On hot days, the surface shimmers like a sheet of ice, creating a surreal visual effect.
Lake Inder’s salt reserves are vast, estimated at around two billion tons. Despite this, industrial salt extraction has not begun, keeping the lake’s ecosystem untouched.
Unique Finds and Rare Species
In the 19th century, Russian explorers discovered Eremurus inderensis on the shores of the lake. It’s a rare plant once heavily harvested for its edible roots and striking flowers. The species nearly vanished but remains a botanical symbol of the region.
Lake Inder also gave its name to the mineral inderite, first identified here. These white or pinkish crystals are among the region’s geological treasures.
How to get there?
Lake Inder lies about 190 km (118 mi) north of Atyrau, near the R-103 (Atyrau-Uralsk) highway. From Atyrau, drive north along the highway and turn right at the entrance to the village of Inderbor. The final 25 km (15.5 mi) stretch is off-road, so a high-clearance vehicle or SUV is recommended.
