Saken Seifullin Kazakh Drama Theater
The Karaganda Kazakh Drama Theater was founded in 1932. Its first stage was located in the old part of the city, in what is now the Parkhomenko Plant area. The original building still stands, though abandoned and in disrepair, and is considered the oldest stone structure in Karaganda.
As the ground in that district began to subside and people moved out, the theater followed. For many years, the troupe performed at the Stanislavsky Russian Drama Theater, sharing its stage.
A new era began in 2008, when the theater received its own modern building. It was erected on the former site of the Summer Theater – a wooden structure with remarkable acoustics, built by Japanese prisoners of war in 1949. Its demolition caused a wave of regret among longtime residents, but a new theater eventually rose in its place. Today, the theater features a main auditorium for 600 people and a small hall for 160.
Performances are staged in Kazakh, and the venue also hosts concerts, stand-up shows, and other cultural events.
