Karaganda Zoo

One of Three Zoos in Kazakhstan

Founded in 1938, Karaganda Zoo is among the oldest in the country and one of only three major zoos in Kazakhstan, along with those in Almaty and Shymkent. Today, it houses about 1,240 animals representing 220 species. Visitors can see lions, tigers, jaguars, hippos, Himalayan and brown bears, zebras, lynxes, and wolves. There are also camels, llamas, parrots, birds of prey, and many others.

The collection continues to grow: in summer 2025, bison were introduced, and the zoo welcomed the births of a baby kangaroo and a baby marmoset monkey.

New Facilities and Exhibits

A new building opened in 2023, featuring aquariums, amphibians, reptiles (including a crocodile), and small monkeys. The zoo also takes pride in its impressive collection of dried butterflies and insects from around the world.

Better Care for Animals

In the past, Karaganda Zoo was known for cramped cages and poor conditions. But in recent years, much has changed. Many animals have been relocated to spacious enclosures designed to resemble natural habitats. Predators enjoy larger cages, and the zoo grounds have become greener and more pleasant for walks. Today, visitors notice not pity, but care and progress. There’s still work ahead, but the improvements inspire optimism. An interesting detail: many of the zoo’s vegetables – zucchini, corn, potatoes, lettuce, tomatoes, and even pumpkins – are grown right on site, ensuring fresh, natural food for the animals.

A Journey Into the Past

A major highlight of 2025 is Dinopark, located on the third floor of the new building. This immersive exhibition features: 12 life-size animatronic dinosaurs that move and roar, tropical plants and themed decorations, painted walls and atmospheric scenery, a tunnel shaped like a dinosaur skeleton. Entry to Dinopark is included in the zoo ticket price. It is open daily (except Monday and Tuesday) from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Holidays and Competitions

Karaganda Zoo is also a lively cultural venue. It regularly hosts celebrations and contests, such as birdhouse competitions, pet photo contests, and naming contests for newborn animals. These events make visits even more interactive and connect guests to the lives of the zoo’s inhabitants.
