Monument to Nurken Abdirov

This monument honours Nurken Abdirov, a World War II hero whose courage became a symbol of self-sacrifice. On December 19, 1942, near the village of Konkov, Abdirov’s aircraft was hit and engulfed in flames. Knowing he would not make it back, the pilot directed his burning plane into a column of enemy tanks. His gunner, Junior Sergeant Alexander Komissarov, chose to stay by his side. Their names are forever intertwined: in Karaganda, Abdirov Avenue and Komissarov Street run parallel.

Unveiled in 1958, the monument features a nine-metre-tall cast-iron figure soaring downward from a marble pedestal. On the nearby building, a mural continues the story depicting a falling plane and a grieving mother.Attractions in Karaganda
