Winter Garden

Opened in January 1993, the Temirtau Winter Garden began with plants brought from the botanical gardens of Almaty and Karaganda. In the harsh 1990s, when heating in the city was shut off, staff kept the place alive with potbelly stoves and managed to save most of the collection. Many of those survivors are still growing there today.

Now the Winter Garden is home to about 120 species from tropical, subtropical, and arid regions. Several varieties of palms, monstera, schefflera, pomegranate, ficus, ginger, oleander, and cacti thrive under the glass roof. Plants you’d normally see as small pots on a windowsill appear here in full-sized, just as they grow in nature.Attractions in Temirtau, Kazakhstan

The tallest residents are the palms. The most prominent are Washingtonia and a date palm brought in back in the 1990s. There’s also a small animal corner: hamsters, rabbits, parrots, and peacocks bring movement and sound to the space.

The atmosphere invites unhurried walks. You can wander the paths, rest on benches under palm leaves, and listen to birdsong.

Opening hours: daily, 10:00 am – 7:00 pm

How to get there?
