Church of Our Lady of Kazan
The Church of Our Lady of Kazan in Kyzylorda, constructed at the close of the 19th century, showcases Russian-Byzantine architectural splendor. It boasts golden hemispherical domes, unplastered brickwork, and a double-height cruciform hall, standing as a symbol of resilience and cultural heritage. This temple is the only Orthodox church in both the city and the surrounding region.
In the 1930s, with the advent of Soviet rule in the area, the church ceased to be a religious sanctuary and housed people forcibly relocated from other parts of the USSR. It later served as an observatory and regional museum. In the late 1980s, the temple was restored to the Orthodox diocese. Unfortunately, years of neglect had taken their toll, resulting in the loss of unique paintings and bells, with only a few icons surviving the passage of time.
In a commendable effort, parishioners and sponsors from various cities in Kazakhstan and beyond rallied together to fund the restoration of the church. The process involved reinstalling bells and crosses, reviving elements of its original grandeur.
