Syrdarya River
The Syrdarya River, spanning an impressive 2,212 kilometers (1375 mi), is one of Central Asia's longest watercourses. It meanders through the territories of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. Its origins lie at the confluence of the Naryn and Karadarya rivers and it eventually flows into the Small Aral Sea. Along its course in Kazakhstan, cities such as Kyzylorda, Baikonur, and Shardara dot its banks. The Shardara Reservoir, one of the country's largest, is positioned along its route.
Primarily harnessed for irrigation purposes, the Syrdarya faces a gradual decline in water volume over the years. The surrounding areas see active engagement in fishing and hunting amidst nearby forests and steppe regions. The river boasts a diverse array of species, including rainbow trout, asp, Aral barbel, common bream, grass carp, Turkistan ide, ruffe, perch, and more.
Legend of the Mystic River
The legend has it that once two shepherd brothers were working for a wealthy yet greedy man. One day they encountered a colossal dragon. They managed to distract the dragon by sacrificing their rams. When the dragon finally retreated, the brothers, fearing the wrath of their owner for the loss of the entire herd, were afraid to return home. Then the brothers met an old man who told them about a land free of greed and harm. This land was allegedly located in a river valley named Syr. Following this sage advice, the brothers discovered a fertile haven, living happily amidst the abundance of the Mystic River.
Known since time immemorial
From ancient times, the Syrdarya has been a prominent feature, documented by Greek scientists as the border for the Scythians and Sogdians. Known by various names such as Yaxartes for the Greeks, Seyhun for the Persians, and the Pearl River for the ancient Turks, the river's historical significance has transcended millennia.
