Akmysh Grove

Tucked between the Northern Aktau Mountains and the Western Karatau Mountains, Akmysh Grove is a small oasis in the middle of the desert. Centered around a spring, the grove contains hundreds of trees and shrubs.

According to some reports, Akmysh Grove was planted in the 1880s and originally had 220 trees. However, in Soviet times, the trees were used as fuel and building materials. As of now, only about fifty old trees remained in the grove. It was not until the 1970s that the grove was replanted. In 2012, Akmysh Grove was fenced, the springs were cleared of debris, and 60 young willows were set out. Nowadays, there are also benches, gazebos, and a parking lot.

What else to see nearby?

Akmysh Grove is a nice attraction along the way but probably not worth the trip alone. It’s usually visited on the way to Mount Sherkala and Torysh Valley. The latter features mysterious globular boulders that you’d definitely like to see.

On the western side of the grove, there are the ruins of the medieval city of Kyzylkala dating back to the 10-13th centuries. Archaeological excavations have uncovered remains of fortifications, a caravanserai (a roadside inn), and a mausoleum.

How to get there?

The grove is located 170 km (106 mi) to the northeast of the city of Aktau. The nearest settlement is Shetpe, 18 km (11 mi) away. The road from Aktau will take about 2.5 hours.
