Blue Bay

Blue Bay, situated on the southwestern coast of the Mangyshlak Peninsula, counts as one of the largest and most beautiful beaches in the Mangystau Region. Although swimming is prohibited there, people still flock to the beach to admire the azure sea and leave city stress behind.

Blue Bay is a perfect picnic spot and the most romantic place to witness the sunset. It is a relaxing getaway where you can watch the sun drop into the sea painting the sky yellow and pink. The sand on the beach is coarse, so the water is always clear, and only changes its shade depending on the lighting.

What else to see nearby?

There are some attractions close to the beach. One of them is a rock called “The Devil's Finger.” Some people claim that if you look at it from a certain angle, you will see the outline of a human face. “The Devil's Finger” is not very picturesque, but it is popular with adrenaline junkies who like to jump into the water from it. However, we strongly recommend you not to do this.

In the south of the Blue Bay, the remains of a medieval fortress wall have been preserved. In the northern part of the beach, you can also see the remains of an old multi-track road. At the beginning of the 20th century, the road was used by fishermen but then was abandoned.

Wildlife enthusiasts will also find the beach interesting. You are likely to spot turtles, monitor lizards, swans, ducks, and geese. If you’re lucky, you’ll probably see goitered gazelles or saiga antelopes.

Just 15 km (9 mi) to the south stands picturesque Cape Sagyndyk with its steep rocky shores. Also, some 30 km (19 mi) away is the Tupkaragan Peninsula, which is home to several archaeological sites and natural wonders.

How to get there?

Public transport is not available, so you can get there only by car. An off-road vehicle is recommended as a part of the road is unpaved.

To reach the Blue Bay from the city of Aktau, drive in the direction of Fort Shevchenko. After 69 km (43 mi), turn left, take the dirt road and drive for about 10 km (6 mi). The distance between Aktau and the beach is 80 km (50 mi). The road will take you a little more than an hour.

If Fort Shevchenko is the starting point of your trip, drive southeast towards Aktau. After 70 km (43.5 mi), turn right and drive 5 km (3 mi) more along the dirt road. The road will also take you about an hour.
