Karynzharyk Hollow

Karynzharyk Hollow is a depression that stretches for 85 km (53 mi) from west to east and divides the Mangyshlak Peninsula and the Ustyurt Plateau. The depression’s lowest point is 75 meters (246 ft) below sea level. The hollow is surrounded by Onere buttes about 150 meters (492 ft) high. Three of them stand next to each other, which is why they were called “Three Warriors” or “Three Brothers.” A large salt pan – Kenderli – covers the hollow’s floor. It’s a vast expanse of land covered with saline water. In summer it dries out leaving a cracked surface covered with salt. In the northern part of the hollow stands Mount Karamaya. According to geological studies, the mountain was formed by a powerful volcanic explosion about 70 million years ago.

Unique wildlife

Despite the harsh climate, Karynzharyk Hollow is home to many species of animals. More than 45 species of mammals, about 111 species of birds, and 22 species of reptiles thrive there. The area is a habitat of Ustyurt mouflons, endemic to the region. There are endangered animals such as manul, caracal, honey badger, sand cat, desert long-eared bat, and cheetah. The reserve is home to endangered species of birds: flamingo, saker falcon, golden eagle, Eurasian eagle-owl, short-toed snake eagle, peregrine falcon, Egyptian vulture, steppe eagle, black-bellied sandgrouse, and glossy ibis.

The hollow’s fauna is surprisingly diverse too. There are more than 260 plant species, 5 of which are rare.

When is the best time to visit?

Summers are very dry and hot there. In July, the temperature rises to +55oC (131oF). Winters are relatively warm with the average temperature being +15oC (59oF).

The best time to visit the hollow is in spring when its bottom is covered with water and resembles a huge mirror reflecting the surrounding buttes. Karynzharyk Hollow attracts photographers; however, pictures can’t convey the magnificence of this place.

How to get there?

Karynzharyk is located in the southwest of the Mangystau Region and is a part of the Ustyurt Nature Reserve, meaning that you can go there only with a tour and accompanied by a guide. First of all, you need to obtain permission to visit the reserve. However, travel agencies usually take on this responsibility and get permissions for all tour participants. Moreover, a tour will also take you to other tourist attractions located nearby.
