Zhaman Sauran Underground Mosque
Zhaman Sauran Underground Mosque is carved inside a limestone rock and consists of two irregularly shaped rooms. The first room’s ceiling is supported by a column. There are also wall niches where most likely candles were placed. The second room can be entered through a small doorway. The doorway was once blocked by stones, but now everybody can enter the second room. There, you can see a burial covered with a white cloth. Unfortunately, there is no information about who built the mosque and who is buried inside.
How to get there?
The mosque is located 12 km (7.5 mi) southeast of the village of Zharmysh. The distance between Zharmysh and Aktau is 183 km (114 mi). The road will take you about 2.5 hours. There are two roads leading to Zharmysh: through the village of Munaishy and through the villages of Tauchik and Shetpe.
It is recommended to take a local guide with you. Some roads are unpaved so a trip here requires a 4WD vehicle. Be sure to plan your trip so that you can visit other attractions located not far from the mosque.
