Lake Imantau

Imantau is a picturesque lake known for calm rather than crowds. The water is clear, the air carries the scent of pine, and dense forest encircles the shoreline. The place offers simple pleasures: a swim in cool water, sun-warmed sand underfoot, or a quiet walk along forest trails. The lake is abundant with roach, ide, perch, pike, crucian carp, and crayfish so fishing there is especially rewarding.

At the heart of the lake lies Tasaral Island, reached by boat. It appears almost untouched by people. Its name means “stone island,” a fitting description. Though locals often call it Snake Island because it’s allegedly inhabited by snakes.

Several guesthouses sit along the southern and southwestern shores, but far fewer than at neighboring Lake Shalkar. The result is a rare sense of seclusion and quiet.

Not far from the shore rises Imantau Peak (621 m/2037 ft). A marked trail leads to the summit along an accessible, pleasant route. From the top, sweeping views open over the lake, the island, and the surrounding forested hills.

How to Get There?

The lake lies in the North Kazakhstan Region, within the Imantau-Shalkar resort area. Distances: about 90 km (56 mi) from Kokshetau, 270 km (168 mi) from Petropavlovsk, and 400 km (250 mi) from Astana.
