Lake Shalkar

Lake Shalkar is one of the most picturesque natural spots in northern Kazakhstan and a great destination for beach lovers. It anchors the Imantau-Shalkar resort area, formed around Lakes Imantau and Shalkar. Unlike most nearby freshwater lakes, Shalkar is slightly saline. Locals often claim its mineral-rich waters have healing properties, though this hasn’t been scientifically confirmed.

The name “Shalkar” comes from the Kazakh word for “spacious,” and the lake truly lives up to it. It covers about 30 square kilometers (18.6 sq.mi) – roughly the size of 4,200 football fields or a small city. The lake reaches an average depth of 5 meters (16 ft), with a maximum of 11 meters (36 ft).

Water Recreation and Outdoor Activities

The lake offers a variety of water activities: boats and catamarans are available for hire. If you want a break from the water, explore the surrounding pine forest or climb Dva Brata (Two Brothers) Hill for sweeping views of the lake and forested landscape. Fishing enthusiasts can try their luck with perch, vendace, peled, carp, and crucian carp. Foragers will enjoy picking mushrooms as well as berries, including wild strawberries, cherries, sea buckthorn, currants, and rose hips.

Beaches and Forests

Shalkar is encircled by pine forests, ensuring fresh air scented with pine. Its southern shore features sandy beaches with a gentle slope into the water. This side is dotted with guesthouses. Most operate during warmer months, but a few welcome visitors even in winter. For tranquility seekers, the northern shore offers unspoiled beaches where you can camp in tents, fall asleep to the gentle rustle of pines, and wake to the lake’s peaceful lapping waters.

How to Get There?

Lake Shalkar lies near the village of Shalkar in the North Kazakhstan Region, about 65 km (40 mi) west of Kokshetau. The lake is accessible by car via the villages of Saumalkol or Shalkar.
