Shymkent Arboretum
The Shymkent Arboretum was opened in 1979, and since then, it has blossomed into a cherished and highly frequented destination among the city's residents. On Shymkent's map, it stands out as a green oasis. Hosting over 105,000 trees and approximately 30,000 plants, it is a haven of lush greenery.
Rare and non-native plants
A notable feat in the arboretum's history is the introduction of 1,500 Siberian fir trees from Katon-Karagai National Park. Additionally, the arboretum boasts a tuliptree, native to North America, marking the first occurrence of this remarkable tree in Kazakhstan. With its poplar-like leaves and pale yellow blossoms, it adds a unique touch to the park. The park's staff has also achieved the acclimatization of pecan, Salix matsudana (Chinese willow), and other notable species.
The arboretum is home to endangered species, including the Malus sieversii (the primary ancestor of most domesticated apple cultivars), Niedzwetzky's apple, Berberis iliensis (Ili barberry), and Juniperus seravschanica (Zeravshan juniper). Notably, there is an alley where trees were planted by Dinmukhamed Kunayev (the First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Kazakh SSR), Nursultan Nazarbayev (the first president of Kazakhstan), Mukhtar Auezov (a Kazakh writer and social activist), and Süleyman Demirel (the 9th President of Turkey).
Leisure opportunities
The park features a picturesque lake inhabited by swans and geese. Ducks and peacocks stroll along its shores, and rowing boats glide across its surface. A recent addition includes a cascading waterfall, culminating in a circular pool featuring a sculpture of lovers standing on a crescent moon.
For those seeking tranquility, the arboretum offers gazebos, benches, and numerous sculptures that beg to be captured in photographs. Picnics are welcomed, and there are bicycle and jogging tracks. Yoga enthusiasts will like the well-maintained lawns. A nostalgic touch is provided by an old railway track, now cloaked in grass, providing a picturesque backdrop for photographs.
In summary, the Shymkent Arboretum is a well-maintained and picturesque park, offering a respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Whether you seek relaxation, leisurely strolls, or vibrant activities, this arboretum invites all to partake in its natural wonders.
