Mausoleum of Karashash Ana

The Mausoleum of Karashash Ana is situated in Sayram, in the eastern part of Shymkent. Notably, it is located approximately 3.5 km (2 mi) away from the Ibrahim Ata Mausoleum, a proximity that makes sense when one considers that Karashash Ana was the wife of Ibrahim and the mother of Khoja Ahmed Yassawi, a renowned poet and Sufi.

Originally constructed in the 13th century, the mausoleum suffered significant damage over time due to the harsh climatic conditions of the region. Eventually, in the 19th century, a new mausoleum was erected to replace the deteriorated structure. The dimensions of the mausoleum measure 27 meters (89 ft) in width, 27 meters in length, and stands at a height of 5 meters (16 ft). Burnt bricks were used in its construction, and the domes and portals on the exterior are characteristic features of such mausoleums.

As you approach the entrance, to the left, you will find a granite plinth shaped like an open book. This plinth bears a carved surah from the Quran in Arabic, along with its translation into Kazakh.

Mother Karashash was held in high esteem among her fellow citizens. She was known for her intelligence, grace, and education, hailing from an affluent family, yet she remained humble. She tirelessly promoted education among the common residents of the city and was renowned for her skill in interpreting dreams.
