Koshkar Ata River Embankment
The Koshkar Ata River, which flows through the heart of Shymkent, is a cherished oasis in this hot and sunny city. Residents enjoy strolling along the embankment, and many take the opportunity to cool off in its waters. Historically, the river was considered sacred, with many still believing in its healing powers. Unfortunately, the reverence for the river has diminished, and pollution has become a significant issue.
In 2023, the embankment underwent reconstruction: the riverbed was cleaned, the banks reinforced with stones, new bridges were built, and tiled pathways were laid. Additionally, sports and children's playgrounds, changing rooms, toilets, gazebos, lifeguard stations, and informational signs about the water's composition were installed along the river. The revitalized embankment now spans about 1.5 km (0.6 mi).
Why is the river called Koshkar Ata?
The river is named after the legendary Sufi Koshkar Ata, who lived in the 12th century. A student of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, Koshkar Ata was believed to be able to heal people and even communicate with animals. His profound knowledge of the Quran and Hadith earned him the respect of the people, leading to his appointment as a judge. Even today, he is revered as a saint.
According to legend, Koshkar Ata died in Shymkent and was buried near the river that flows through the city. A mausoleum was later built over his grave, becoming a site of pilgrimage.
The original mausoleum was located near the railway station, but in the 1960s, the area began to be developed, and the tomb was dismantled and moved to a new location. The current mausoleum, though more modest, continues to attract pilgrims to this day.
How to get there?
The landscaped section of the embankment is located in the center of Shymkent and stretches from the railway station to Ordabasy Square. The mausoleum is located on the river bank, directly across from the Medina residential complex and adjacent to Kabanbay Batyr Avenue.
