Ordabasy Square
Ordabasy Square, nestled in the heart of Shymkent's historic district, is surrounded by noteworthy landmarks. Here, one can find the Independence Park, the Old Town, and the Koshkar Ata River meandering nearby. Near the square lies a mosque bearing the same name. Over a century and a half ago, the square served as the site of an old market, which was eventually relocated elsewhere. In 1728, Ordabasy Square witnessed a momentous event in Kazakh history when all three Kazakh juzes (unions of clans) came together to sign an agreement for friendship and peace. This alliance was forged to protect their lands against invaders.
At the center of Ordabasy Square stands the remarkable Mother Earth Stele, a monument soaring to a height of 34 meters (112 ft). At its top stands an 8-meter-tall sculpture symbolizing Mother Earth. Elaborate national ornaments adorn the stele's base, while words of wisdom are etched into its surface, courtesy of the three most renowned bis – Tole bi, Kazybek bi, and Aiteke bi. These bis, each coming from a different juz, were judges, politicians, and public figures. Interestingly, three streets in the city are named in honor of these influential figures, all of which originate from Ordabasy Square.
For tourists embarking on their exploration of Shymkent, Ordabasy Square serves as the ideal starting point. Many begin their journey by venturing to Independence Park, conveniently located within walking distance, to further immerse themselves in the city's rich history and culture.
