Central Mosque of Shymkent

The Central Mosque in Shymkent stands as an unmistakable symbol of the city. This snow-white edifice was built in 2013. Its creation was the result of the visionary initiative of Kazakhstan's first president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, and received crucial support from the President of the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Beyond its expansive prayer areas for both men and women, this mosque complex encompasses an ablution hall, an imam's residence, a Muslim café, a library, and a store offering religious items.

Shortly after its opening in 2013, the mosque acquired its official name, the Central Mosque. However, it is known by locals as the Sheikh's Mosque or the Bekzhan Mosque, a nod to the Bekzhan Market situated directly across from it. This practice of situating bazaars and mosques close to each other dates back to ancient urban planning principles, where they served as integral components of the urban landscape.

The mosque's exterior is truly impressive, featuring four towering minarets and a distinctive, grand white dome. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by an interior reminiscent of a traditional Kazakh yurt, bathed in the glow of numerous chandeliers. The use of white marble in its construction adds an aura of grandeur to the Central Mosque, earning it the nickname "Aqmeshit," derived from the Kazakh word for "white mosque."

It's important to note that the Central Mosque welcomes individuals of all backgrounds, regardless of their religion or nationality. The primary requirement for entry is appropriate attire, which applies equally to both men and women.
