Mount Eshki Tau (Mount Ichka)
Mount Eshki Tau (Mount Ichka) The highest point in the West Kazakhstan Region. Mount Eshki Tau, also known as Mount Ichka, is the highest point in the West Kazakhstan Region. Of course, calling it a “mountain” in the traditional sense might be a stretch. At just 259 meters (850 ft), it is more of a hill. Yet in the flat steppe, even this modest elevation stands out as a striking natural landmark.
A Steppe Island of Life
The true treasure of Eshki Tau lies in its remarkable biodiversity. Within a relatively small area, 117 plant species have been recorded, 41 of which are rare or endangered. Some of them cannot be found anywhere else in Kazakhstan, including Globularia bisnagarica and Jurinea kirghisorum.
The name “Eshki Tau” translates as “Goat Mountain.” It's logical to assume that goats once roamed here, but today they are nowhere to be found. Still, the mountain is home to foxes, hares, wild boars, and other small steppe animals.
Eshki Tau is not only a natural attraction but also an important historical site. Several Paleolithic settlements have been discovered in the surrounding area, including one located directly on the mountain’s slopes. The summit provided a wide view of the surrounding steppe, allowing ancient inhabitants to keep watch over the area and spot potential threats from afar. Another distinctive feature of Eshki Tau is its aspen grove. In the open steppe, such groves are quite rare.

What to Know Before You Go
Eshki Tau is located within a specially protected natural area, and a permit is required to visit. Local tour operators often organize tours and can help arrange both transportation and permits.
It is also important to note that the area lies within a border zone, so visitors must carry identification documents at all times.
Before the area received protected status, Ichka was a popular recreation spot, which unfortunately led to environmental damage. The slopes were littered with trash, and at one point, the aspen grove was even destroyed by fire caused by visitors. Today, thanks to conservation efforts, Eshki Tau has regained its beauty and once again appears clean and well cared for.
