Mikhail Sholokhov Museum
Few people know that the life of renowned Soviet writer Mikhail Sholokhov was closely connected with Western Kazakhstan. The author of And Quiet Flows the Don, Virgin Soil Upturned, and The Fate of a Man not only visited the Urals region but eventually came to regard Kazakhstan as his second home.
Today, in the village of Darinskoye near Uralsk, visitors can explore a memorial museum dedicated to the writer. In addition, it offers a journey into the wartime years, Soviet history, and the vast Ural steppe landscapes that Sholokhov deeply loved.
How Did Sholokhov End Up in Kazakhstan?
During World War II, Sholokhov’s family was evacuated to Kazakhstan. From 1942 to 1943, they lived in the village of Darinskoye. The writer himself visited his family there, and after the war he returned to Western Kazakhstan many times. He came to hunt and fish, meet local residents, and continue his literary work.
There, Sholokhov wrote wartime essays and the first chapters of his novel They Fought for Their Country. He also began working on the essay Across Western Kazakhstan.
According to local accounts, during one of his stays in Darinskoye Sholokhov learned he had been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
The Museum the Writer Personally Approved
The memorial museum opened in September 1979 while Sholokhov was still alive. At first, the writer was hesitant about the idea. He agreed only on one condition: the museum should tell not only his own story, but also the history and culture of the entire region.
As a result, the museum today combines several exhibitions under one roof. Visitors can explore displays on local nature and archaeology, a WWII exhibition, an art gallery, and even a reconstructed Kazakh yurt. Because of this, the museum remains interesting even for travelers unfamiliar with the writer’s books.
Still, the museum’s greatest treasures are Sholokhov’s personal belongings. Among the exhibits are his typewriter, hunting rifle, fishing gear, tableware, letters, and photographs. One of the most valuable items on display is a copy of And Quiet Flows the Don bearing a personal inscription from the author himself.
