Uralsk Central Park

Central Park in Uralsk is more than just a green space, it’s a living historical landmark. Founded in 1840, it is considered the oldest park in Kazakhstan.

From the Military Garden to the City’s Main Park

Originally known as the Military Garden, the park was created as a recreation area for the Ural Cossacks. At the time, the summer residence of the ataman (the Cossack leader) stood there.

One of the residence’s famous guests was Leo Tolstoy, who stayed there for several days while visiting Governor Arkady Stolypin.

In 1891, the park welcomed the future Emperor Nicholas II during his journey across the empire. A concert was organized in his honor, featuring performers, including a young Feodor Chaliapin, who was only beginning his rise to international fame.

A Park That Survived Wars and Floods

During the Civil War, a defensive line ran through the park. In the 1920s, part of the park was temporarily turned into a state farm before eventually returning to its role as a public recreation area.

After the assassination of revolutionary leader Sergei Kirov, the park was renamed Kirov Park and kept that name for many decades.

In 1942, a devastating flood destroyed several pre-revolutionary buildings, including the ataman’s residence and the stage where Chaliapin once performed.

After World War II, the park once again became the city’s main leisure area. Following Kazakhstan’s independence, it gained a neutral name – Uralsk Central Park.

What to See Today

Today, the park remains one of the most popular places to take a stroll in Uralsk. Located on the banks of the Chagan River, it is especially lively during the summer months.

Visitors will find amusement rides, a Ferris wheel, shaded walking paths, and a riverside beach. You can also take a boat or motorboat ride along the river and cross a pedestrian bridge to the opposite bank, where the green riverside promenade continues.

One of the park’s more unusual attractions is its health trail, designed for barefoot walking. The path includes sections filled with sand, stones, and pine cones. It’s believed the walk helps improve circulation and promote relaxation.
