Museum of Yemelyan Pugachev

Historical Background

The history of Uralsk is deeply intertwined with the Pugachev Rebellion. It was a peasant revolt led by Yemelyan Pugachev, a Cossack who claimed to be the deposed emperor Peter III. The uprising unfolded between 1773 and 1775 during the reign of Catherine the Great. Promising freedom from serfdom and relief from heavy taxes, Pugachev drew support from peasants, Cossacks, and other oppressed groups.

The rebels seized a number of towns across the Volga and Ural regions, but the movement was eventually crushed by imperial forces. Pugachev was captured and executed.

A House with a Story

Today, Uralsk is home to the only museum in the world devoted to Pugachev. Here, the dramatic events of the 18th century come alive, transforming history from distant narrative into a vivid experience.

The museum is housed in an authentic 18th-century Cossack house, once owned by the Cossack Pyotr Kuznetsov. Within these walls Pugachev married 17-year-old Ustinya Kuznetsova, the owner’s daughter.

The Kuznetsov family did everything they could to avoid this forced union with the self-proclaimed “tsar.” However, refusal was impossible – at the height of the rebellion, Pugachev’s authority seemed absolute. The wedding went ahead, followed by a lavish feast. Ustinya later became known in history as the “Yaik Empress,” Pugachev’s second wife.

What to See?

The collection includes items associated with Pugachev and his closest followers: weapons, banners, clothing, tableware, and everyday household objects. Particularly striking are Pugachev’s throne and a replica of the iron cage in which he was transported to Moscow (the original is preserved in the State Historical Museum).

The museum grounds also feature a reconstructed Cossack farmstead with stables, a well, a cellar, a summer kitchen, and fishing equipment.
