Museum of Alexander Pushkin
Alexander Pushkin is celebrated as Russia’s greatest poet and the founder of modern Russian literature. His brief visit to Uralsk left a lasting imprint on literary history, as the city became an important source of material for one of his best works.
A Journey That Shaped a Masterpiece
Pushkin stayed in Uralsk from September 21 to 23, 1833. Known for his commitment to historical accuracy, he carefully verified facts and gathered firsthand accounts. While in the city, he researched the Pugachev Rebellion – a major peasant uprising in the Russian Empire.
He worked in archives, spoke with eyewitnesses, and visited the Kuren district, once the epicenter of the rebellion. These experiences later shaped his novella The Captain's Daughter and his historical study The History of Pugachev.
From Cossack Residence to Cultural Landmark
During his visit, Pushkin stayed in the residence of appointed ataman (Cossack leader) Vasily Pokatilov. Today, this building houses the museum dedicated to the poet. The house was designed by Italian architect M. Delmedino and remains one of the city’s notable architectural landmarks.
Step Into Pushkin’s Era
The museum offers visitors a journey into the atmosphere of the early 19th century.
Among the exhibits, you’ll find:
- antique furniture and a harpsichord
- copies of Pushkin’s manuscripts and rare editions
- replicas of his personal items, including a cap, top hat, and cane
- photographs of old Uralsk, recreating the city’s historical appearance
One particularly notable exhibit is a ceremonial hammer on a silver tray, presented in 1891 to Nicholas II during the foundation-laying of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.
Also on display is an original portrait of acting ataman David Borodin, painted by the renowned artist Vasily Tropinin.
The exhibition concludes with a copy of Pushkin’s famous death mask. The originals were taken in 1837 by sculptor Samuil Galberg immediately after the poet’s death and are preserved in major museums.
