Ancient Taraz Archaeological Park and Museum

The city of Taraz, situated in southern Kazakhstan, is one of the oldest settlements in the country, with its roots dating back to 36 BC. It played a pivotal role as a stop along the Silk Road. Taraz has preserved its rich history through the creation of an open-air museum, allowing visitors to delve into the fascinating past of this remarkable city.

A journey through time

In 2011, archaeological excavations were conducted at the site of the current park and the former Central Bazaar, revealing the ancient settlement's location. Among the discoveries were the remnants of a fortress, a mosque, a madrasah (a religious school), residential structures, a water supply system, a zindan (an underground prison), an altar of fire worshipers, and a caravanserai (an inn). To facilitate exploration without causing harm, wooden bridges were installed for tourists to navigate and observe these archaeological finds.

The park boasts various attractions, including the observation tower standing at 34 meters (112 ft), the uniquely designed House of Friendship, Mynbulak Square, the Taraz Sazdary stele, the Great Silk Road Alley, and the ethnocultural center, along with the ethnographic museum. The observation tower offers breathtaking panoramic views of the entire complex, while the House of Friendship captures attention with its semicircular roof design.

A glimpse into Taraz's heritage

Comprising three levels, the museum showcases an impressive collection of 2,800 archaeological finds from the site, featuring dioramas portraying the lives of city residents and the intricate irrigation system. The exhibits include a diverse array of artifacts such as ceramics, metalwork, jewelry, and bone products spanning different eras. Noteworthy items on display range from 11th-12th-century dishes, spherocones (vessels for medicines or poisons), and food containers to intricately ornamented lamps, medieval glass products, a treasure trove of gold jewelry, and the burial site of a noble couple alongside their horses.

For those eager to delve into Taraz's captivating history, a visit to this corner of the ancient city is a must. The excavations are still ongoing, with considerable efforts invested in the reconstruction, conservation, and protection of the discovered monuments.
