Tekturmas Mausoleum

The Tekturmas Mausoleum is a revered pilgrimage site and an iconic landmark in Taraz. Tradition holds that this mausoleum was constructed over the burial site of Sultan Mahmud Khan, the commander-in-chief of Karakhan’s army. Karakhan was the founder of the Karakhanid dynasty, the first Muslim Turkic ruling family. Despite the unfortunate destruction of Sultan Mahmud Khan's original mausoleum, a reconstruction was undertaken in 1935. The mausoleum was rebuilt and its appearance was restored according to historical sketches. The new mausoleum was named "Tekturmas", an homage to the eponymous hill on which it stands.

Adhering to the classic style of early Islamic architecture, the mausoleum features a square brick room, crowned with one large dome and four smaller domes, accompanied by pointed arches.

Positioned atop a hill on the right bank of the Talas River, the Tekturmas Mausoleum offers an exhilarating experience for visitors, affording panoramic views of Taraz. Scholars and archaeologists assert that this hill served not only as the resting place for Sultan Mahmud but also as an ancient necropolis. The discoveries encompass burials not only of Muslims but also of individuals following Zoroastrian and Nestorian beliefs. Tekturmas Hill, in addition to its historical significance, is renowned for its underground passages. Though presently closed, they may potentially be reopened to tourists in the future.

Approximately 800 meters (875 yd) away from the Tekturmas Mausoleum lies the Tekturmas Ethno-Historical Complex. It is crucial not to confuse it with the mausoleum. While the former is a sacred site of profound historical importance, the latter serves as a space for leisure and relaxation.

How to get there?

Accessing the Tekturmas Mausoleum by car or taxi is recommended. There are no direct bus routes to the mausoleum. However, if you opt for public transportation, you can take bus #33 to reach the Tekturmas stop on Zhangeldin Street. From there, proceed on foot: head in the direction of the Talas River. Once you reach the Tekturmas Ethno-Historical Complex, turn right and continue straight along the street until you reach the mausoleum. The walk covers a distance of 1 kilometer (0.6 mi) and should take approximately 15 minutes.
