Aulie Agash

Aulie Agash, also known as Kieli Agash, is a remarkable elm tree flourishing in the Jetysu region of Kazakhstan, specifically in the village of Aulieagash.

The name «Aulie Agash» translates from Kazakh as «sacred tree». Astonishingly, it is believed that Aulie Agash has stood for over 700 years, defying the typical lifespan of elm trees, which generally reach a maximum 300 years. The tree's trunk boasts an impressive diameter of 6.5 meters (20 ft), necessitating the embrace of five to six individuals to fully encircle it. This colossal tree stands amidst a grove of its smaller «relatives». A well-constructed path leads visitors to Aulie Agash, with gazebos and benches placed within the grove, offering a tranquil resting place for tourists.

Adorned with ribbons and scarves tied to its branches, Aulie Agash becomes a site for visitors to express their desires, seek assistance in personal matters, or offer prayers. It is believed that the tree possesses a unique healing energy, drawing crowds of people who seek solace and hope in its presence.

A legend recounts the tree's origin: a merchant named Baibosyn traveled with his caravan along the Silk Road. When the caravan rested at this very location, Baibosyn planted his staff in the ground, only to discover the following morning that it had miraculously transformed into a young tree. To this day, Aulie Agash is diligently protected by a «shyrakshy», a guardian entrusted with safeguarding this sacred place. The shyrakshy enlightens tourists about the tree, its healing properties, the legends surrounding it, and even treats visitors with the sap collected at the elm's roots.

How to get there?

To reach Aulie Agash from Almaty, take the A-351 highway, which transitions into R-21. Pass through Otegen-Batyr, Baltabay, Shelek, and Nurly, with the Ili River on your left. After Charyn National Park, turn left towards Darbazakum and Koktal villages. From Koktal village, it's approximately 12 km (7.5 mi) to the sacred tree. The entire journey covers around 297 km (185 mi) and takes approximately 3.5 hours.
