Kalakai Prehistoric Monument

The Kalakai Monument is a fascinating historical site located in the foothills of the Bayan-Jurek Ridge, on the coast of the Bien River. The circular monument is approximately 100 meters (109 yd) in diameter and features a large boulder at its center, adorned with petroglyphs from the Scythian era. The boulder is of moraine origin and is surrounded by holes that were likely used for sacrifices. Additionally, smaller stones can be found at the cardinal points around the boulder.

Experts suggest that the Kalakai Monument dates back to the first millennium BC and is a testament to the early Scythian civilization that once inhabited the region. However, there are differing opinions on the purpose of the monument. Some believe that it served as an observatory for studying celestial bodies, while others suggest that it was used as a calendar to mark natural phenomena such as sunrises and sunsets. It is also possible that the stone circle served as a sundial, as its circular shape with stones laid out in a cross resembles a clock face.

Regardless of its purpose, the Kalakai Monument is a significant find for archaeologists and a valuable cultural and historical heritage site. It is also an interesting destination for tourists seeking to learn more about the ancient Scythian civilization.
