Khorgos International Center for Cross-Border Cooperation

Khorgos, situated on the Kazakhstan-China border, encompasses two towns that collectively form an economic zone for trade and commerce, functioning as a dry port for efficient goods transportation. The Khorgos International Center of Cross-Border Cooperation, established in the region, serves as a comprehensive complex facilitating collaboration between Kazakhstan and China in areas such as trade, tourism, economy, and investments. This collaborative effort aligns with the Belt and Road Initiative, serving as a modern counterpart to the historical Silk Road.

The inception of Khorgos dates back to 2002, gaining momentum with the signing of an intergovernmental agreement in 2004. This agreement outlined favorable terms for cooperation. Distinctive features of Khorgos include a 30-day visa-free stay in the neighboring state, unrestricted movement of goods, transport, and people. China permits the duty-free export of goods up to 8,000 yuan, while Kazakhstan allows duty-free export once a month for goods valued at 500 euros or weighing 25 kg.

Originally conceived as a tourist hub, Khorgos has evolved primarily into a bustling shopping area. The region boasts several large shopping facilities offering a diverse array of products. Tourists are required to obtain a special pass and may incur parking fees if driving. It's noteworthy that there are specific rules for visitors, detailed on the official website of Khorgos, which must be adhered to while exploring the center.
