Lake Jasylkol

Lake Jasylkol, also spelled Zhasylkol, is a stunning natural wonder nestled in the Dzungarian Alatau Mountains, and is 2 km (1.2 mi) long and approximately 600 m (656 yd) wide. With depths that can reach up to 50 meters (164 ft), the lake is a magnificent addition to the Zhongar-Alatau National Park. This gem was formed as a result of a historical earthquake, where large boulders obstructed the Agynykatty River. Today, some of these massive rocks still jut out from the water, adding to the lake's mystique.

Surrounded by towering mountains and majestic fir trees, the lake is situated in an enchanting location. The water's hue changes like a chameleon depending on the season, weather, and melting glaciers. During the spring, the lake appears cloudy and milky, while in autumn, it takes on a bluish crystal-like appearance. In summer, it transforms into a green or blue expanse, while in winter, the water turns lead-colored. Visiting the lake is a true pleasure, with its tranquil surroundings and serene ambiance.Жасылколь

What sets Jasylkol apart is the presence of wapitis, who have made their home in the lake's environs due to the sparse human population. As the lake is located in the border zone, it was almost entirely deserted for several decades. However, with an increase in tourist visits, many have come to see the lake, explore nearby national park attractions, and sample the region's famous honey, produced in the highland apiaries of the Dzungarian Alatau.

The best time to visit is from late spring to mid-autumn. If you plan to go later, be sure to bring warm clothing, food, and drinks. Trekking to Jasylkol is moderately challenging, but it's best to go on a guided tour with a specialist who can show you other wonders of the Dzungarian Alatau.

How to get there?

Lake Jasylkol is situated in the Jetysu Region of Kazakhstan, east of the charming town of Sarkand, and near the China border. To reach the lake, one must travel approximately 600 km (373 mi) from Almaty to the village of Lepsi, where the Zhongar-Alatau National Park office is located. This journey typically takes around 8 hours, following the Almaty-Ust-Kamenogorsk route. From Lepsi, visitors will embark on a 30 km (19 mi) journey through stunning and picturesque landscapes before reaching the lake.
