Springs in the Altyn-Emel National Park
Whether it's the rhythmic sounds of the sea, the gentle flow of a river, or the soothing murmur of a stream, water has a remarkable impact on our senses. Within the Altyn-Emel National Park, springs not only produce calming sounds but are also believed to possess healing properties.
Shoqan Walikhanov Spring
Named after the eminent researcher, ethnographer, and scientist Sh. Walikhanov, this spring lies a mere 2 km (1.2 mi) from the Singing Dune, the park's iconic symbol. It finds its way to the Kosbastau Tract, nestled in the foothills of the Small Kalkan Mountains.
In 1856, Walikhanov and his expedition traversed this area. The expeditionaries halted at this oasis to rest. Visitors should note that the spring dries up during the dry season. Accessible via a pathway, the spring area also features wooden gazebos.
Nayzatapkan Spring
This spring is situated at the base of Mount Ulkentau, approximately 35 km (22 mi) from the village of Basshi. It is regarded as sacred by Kazakhstanis, and men and women should visit the spring separately according to Muslim traditions. The water here is not only considered healing but also remarkably tasty. Each spring at Nayzatapkan possesses distinct properties, addressing conditions such as skin and vascular diseases, nervous system issues, and aiding in lowering blood pressure.
Kosbastau Spring
Nestled in the tract of the same name, the Kosbastau spring is enriched with radon. In close proximity, a colossal 700-year-old willow and a grove of "dancing" turanga add to the allure of the surroundings.
Akbulak Waterfall
Lesser known to some tourists, the Akbulak Waterfall graces the Kyzylauyz Gorge. It’s notable for its brief existence – lasting only one month each year during the melting of snow. Nevertheless, the area remains picturesque even when the spring dries up in hot weather. The iron tree, a rare find in the national park, grows in this vicinity.
Given that the Altyn-Emel springs are dispersed throughout the park, journeying to them offers opportunities to explore wonders like the Singing Dune, Oshaktas Stelae, and Burial Mounds of Besshatyr. The park's diverse landscape, abundant with rare plants and animals, promises a captivating experience that may take at least a couple of days to fully appreciate. To cater to the comfort of tourists, we have organized a variety of tours in the Altyn-Emel National Park, ensuring there's an option for every taste.
How to get there?
The Altyn-Emel National Park is easily accessible via the Almaty-Ust-Kamenogorsk and Almaty-Khorgos highways, and the route is well-marked with numerous signs, making navigation straightforward. While reaching the park is not challenging, it’s advised to drive an SUV because of the rough terrain within the park.
