The Village of Cherkassk
The village of Cherkassk is situated in the Jetysu Region of Kazakhstan, and its establishment dates back to 1909. One of its main attractions is the Museum of the History of the Sarkand District, which provides insights into the area's past. Additionally, there is a memorial dedicated to the Cherkas Defense, which occurred during 1918-1919 amidst the backdrop of the Russian Revolution.
The conflict between the newcomers from the Russian Empire and the locals resulted in the Cherkas Defense, which took place in the bastion comprising 12 villages of the Lepsi district. The locals held the defense for a prolonged period, but eventually, most of them were compelled to surrender. The Cherkas Defense fell on October 14, 1919.
The memorial, situated on the hill where the fighting took place, was erected in honor of the participants of the Cherkas Defense. It comprises three pyramids of silver-gray color, symbolizing rebellion and struggle against enemies. The pyramids form a symbolic ring, and an eternal flame burns at the center.
Beside the memorial complex lies the Museum of the History of the Sarkand District, which opened its doors in 1978. The museum is a one-story building adorned with white and orange frescoes depicting fighters and symbolic inscriptions. Visitors can explore a variety of historical artifacts, including guns, rifle parts, pre-revolutionary banknotes, and interesting antiques such as a peasant's hut with embroidered towels, shirts, a sewing machine, a spinning wheel, a kerosene lamp, and more.
Museum opening hours:
