Oshaktas Stelae

The Oshaktas Stelae, a monument located near the Kalkan Mountains within Altyn-Emel National Park, consists of three tall vertical stones arranged in a circular formation. Standing at approximately 2 meters (6.6 ft) in height, these stelae serve as a captivating attraction for visitors.

What were they used for?

According to one of the most reliable versions, the Oshaktas Stelae also functioned as an altar. This region has a long-standing history of being utilized by nomads for pagan rituals and sacrifices. As such, the monument is believed to be several thousand years old.

Another interpretation suggests that the monument may have been associated with the army of Genghis Khan during the 13th century. It is speculated that the army stopped at this site, requiring a substantial bonfire to feed the thousands of warriors. In support of this theory, a massive cauldron was set up on the stones for cooking food. However, it should be noted that this version remains controversial as there is no written evidence confirming Genghis Khan's presence in the vicinity.

The third proposed explanation suggests that the Oshaktas Stelae served as a signal tower. By kindling fires atop these tall stones, the resulting smoke could be used to alert nearby communities of enemy approaches or attacks.

Natural wonders nearby

While journeying towards Oshaktas, tourists are treated to the breathtaking natural beauty of Altyn-Emel National Park, which boasts a diverse range of flora and fauna. Just 30 kilometers (19 mi) away from the stelae lie the burial mounds of Besshatyr. Additionally, within the Kosbastau Tract, a centuries-old willow tree stands as a testament to the park's rich heritage. However, the true gem of the park is the Singing Dune, a natural phenomenon that should not be missed. To fully appreciate the wonders of Altyn-Emel National Park, it is recommended to allocate a couple of days.
