Ala-Too Square
Ala-Too Square is the main square of Bishkek and one of the most recognizable landmarks of the Kyrgyz capital. It’s a popular gathering place for residents and visitors, as well as a venue for major public celebrations and national events.
The Meaning Behind the Name
In Kyrgyz, “Ala-Too” translates as “variegated mountains.” The name refers to the contrasting colors of mountain peaks, where white snow alternates with dark rock. Ala-Too is also a collective term for several major mountain ranges in the Northern Tien Shan, located in Kyrgyzstan.
A Symbol of Kyrgyz Identity
Over the past few decades, the appearance of Ala-Too Square has changed several times, reflecting different periods in the country's history.
In 1984, when Kyrgyzstan was part of the Soviet Union, a statue of Vladimir Lenin was installed on the square. In 2003, it was relocated to a nearby square and replaced by a sculpture of a winged woman called Erkindik, symbolizing freedom.
In 2011, a monument to Manas, the central figure of the Kyrgyz epic, was unveiled to mark the 20th anniversary of Kyrgyzstan's independence. The sculpture depicted the hero on horseback, holding a sword and a shield in his left hand.
In January 2025, the city administration announced plans to replace the monument. The sculpture of Manas was removed, leaving the main square without its central monument for more than six months.
The new monument was unveiled in August 2025. Reaching a total height of 33 meters (108 ft), it is almost twice as tall as its predecessor. The pedestal is clad in white marble and tilted at a 15-degree angle, evoking the image of snow-capped mountain peaks. Atop it stands a bronze sculpture of Manas on horseback. The hero holds a spear in his hand, a golden eagle soars behind him.
Ala-Too Square is also home to the country's principal 100-meter flagpole. An honor guard protects the flag, and the ceremonial changing of the guard takes place every hour.
The Center of Public Life
Ala-Too Square is a focal point of public life in Bishkek. It hosts major celebrations, including Independence Day festivities and New Year events, as well as various festivals and public gatherings. Several fountains add to the square's appeal but they operate only during the warmer months.
In the evenings, the square draws families and visitors who come to enjoy a leisurely stroll. The surrounding streets are lined with cafes and restaurants where visitors can unwind and experience the atmosphere of Bishkek.
