American Photographer Captures the Art of Falconry in Kazakhstan

Karolina Wojtasik, New York-based photographer known for her striking portraits of people around the world, has unveiled a new photo series celebrating the ancient art of falconry in Kazakhstan. The project earned her the prestigious Communication Arts Award of Excellence.

The photos were taken in the Almaty region, specifically in the village of Kurty and the foothills of the Ile Alatau Mountains. There, Wojtasik met the berkutchi – Kazakh eagle hunters who devote their lives to training birds of prey and hunting with them. Her images capture the powerful bond between human and raptor, blending centuries-old Kazakh tradition with the rhythms of modern life.

The series quickly caught the attention of an international audience. Its powerful visuals, attention to cultural detail, and deep respect for tradition made it a standout and widely discussed body of work.

Outside her personal projects, Wojtasik works with HBO, contributing to shows like Pretty Little Liars and the Gossip Girl reboot. Her portfolio now also tells the story of the Kazakh berkutchi, seen through her lens with both artistry and empathy.

For those who want to experience falconry firsthand, we offer a tour from Astana. An experienced berkutchi will share the secrets of training. The tour culminates in a live hunting demonstration.
