Manshuk Mametova Lake

Manshuk Mametova Lake, also known as Lake No. 6, is a high mountain reservoir nestled in the Ile Alatau Mountains at an elevation of 3550 m (11647 ft), situated at the foot of the Manshuk Mametova glacier, which is the primary source of the lake's water. The lake was named in honor of Manshuk Mametova, the first Kazakh woman to be awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union, for her bravery during the Second World War. On 15 October 1943, Mametova held her ground on a strategic hill despite waves of German soldiers approaching. Despite her machine gun crew falling to enemy fire, Mametova kept fighting alone, taking out over 70 enemy combatants before succumbing to her wounds.

The color of the water at Manshuk Mametova Lake is usually a stunning jade green, though it can vary depending on weather and seasonal conditions. During winter, the reservoir freezes over, and the ice doesn't begin to thaw until closer to summer.

The road to the lake passes through enchanting coniferous forests, giving way to barren rocks and hills with sparse vegetation. If you're fortunate, you may catch a glimpse of the local fauna and flora, such as marmots or edelweiss. The lake and the surrounding area offer fantastic photo opportunities.

Just a few hundred meters from the lake stands the Mynzhylki dam, constructed as a precaution against mudflows. It's not easy to get lost here, even if you're a novice tourist, since the entire route is marked with signs. However, it's best to purchase a tour to ensure you don't miss out on any of the area's hidden gems.

How to get there?

To reach the lake, you can either drive by car (an off-road vehicle is preferred) or take a taxi, passing through the Medeu Skating Rink, the Shymbulak Ski Resort, and the Tuyuk-Su alpine camp, and then following the signs. While the initial portion of the road is paved and in good condition, dirt trails commence higher up in the mountains.
