Museum of Almaty

The Museum of Almaty, founded in 2002, is a relatively new addition to the cultural scene. Housed in a beautifully preserved late 19th-century former orphanage, the building itself is a fascinating artifact, a one-story wooden log structure that exemplifies traditional Russian architecture. The doors and windows are adorned with stunningly carved wooden architraves, adding to the charm and character of the building.

Inside, the museum boasts 11 halls that showcase different periods of Almaty's history, from ancient and medieval times to the Soviet and modern eras. Visitors can learn about the December events of 1986, one of the first mass protests against the Communist Party in the USSR, as well as the development of culture and art, and the history of mountaineering in the country.

The museum's vast collection includes rare photographs and documents, fine art, everyday and cultural items from different eras, national clothing of the peoples of Kazakhstan, a numismatic collection, and more. History enthusiasts will be especially drawn to the archaeological collection, featuring historical finds from the Boraldai Scythian burial mounds, where the burial places of the Scythian nobility were discovered. Meanwhile, the collection of porcelain and ceramic dishes offers aesthetic pleasure.

For those interested in exploring the Southern capital, the Museum of Almaty is an excellent choice, and we offer two excursions that include this fascinating attraction. The first one will take you around the city including the mountainous areas, while the second one is a more affordable option.
